Event 8
November 6, 1956- This was the Presidential Election of 1956. It was the 43rd Presidential Election. This election was a rematch of the 1952 Presidential Election. As it was Eisenhower against Adlai Stevenson. Eisenhower's health raised questions and Adlai never held any office. They both ignored the Civil Rights but in the end Eisenhower would again beat Adlai and go for a second term.
Event 9
September 9, 1957- The Civil Rights Act of 1957 was passed. It was an act signed off by President Eisenhower. It granted voting privileges to African Americans. It was passed because there was a lot of unrest facing the country due to black soldiers returning from WWII. They felt as though they were not being treated equally in a country that they had just returned home to after fighting a war for. It never became a law because of Southern Senators.
Event 10
July 29, 1958- The President Dwight D. Eisenhower established the National Aeronautics and Space Administration. July 29 was when the National Aeronautics and Space Administration was passed, disestablishing NASA's predecessor. The National Aeronautics and Space Administration is also known as the most famously known NASA. It is an agency of The United States Government and is responsible for the nation's civilian Space Program and for aeronautics and aerospace research. The new agency became operational on October 1, 1958.
Event 11
Jan. 3, 1959- Alaska is admitted into the United States. It is the 49th State of the U.S. It is the largest state by area in the United States. Alaska's economy is dominated by the oil, natural gas, and fishing industries; it has these resources in abundance. The capital of the state is Juneau. It is also known as Alyeska, the "great land", an Aleut word obtained from the same root.
Event 12
Aug. 21, 1959- The Capital is Honolulu. Yes it is Hawaii. Hawaii is the most recent state to be admitted into the United States. It is the 50th of the U.S. It is the only state made up of entirely of islands. Hawaii is the 8th smallest and the 11th least populated among the 50 U.S. states. Hawaii does not observe Daylight Savings. Hawaii is the only state with Asian plurality.
Event 13
May 1, 1960- On that day a U-2 spy plane was shot down. It was shot down during an espionage over the Soviet Union . They had to issue a cover statement for what happened. Soviet Leader Khrushchev pulled off one of the most dramatic moments of the Cold War by producing not only the mostly-intact wreckage of the U-2, but also the captured pilot-very much alive. Eisenhower had to tell the public that the U-2 was a spy plane. The pilot, Francis Gary Powers, was released in 1962 in exchange for a captured Soviet spy.
Event 14
May 6, 1960- This was when the Civil Rights Act of 1960 was effected. Following the 1957 Civil Rights Act, President Dwight D. Eisenhower introduced another Civil Rights Act. It was his reaction to a violent outbreak of bombings against churches and schools in the South. Politicians from the south were furious because they thought of it as Federal Interference in state affairs. It was signed to eliminate certain loopholes left by the Civil Rights Act of 1957. The 1960 Civil Rights Act introduced penalties to be imposed against anybody who obstructed someone’s attempt to register to vote or someone’s attempt to actually vote.
Event 15
November 8, 1960- John F. Kennedy is elected president. This was the 44th presidential election. The election on November 8, 1960, remains one of the most famous election nights in American history. Former President Dwight D. Eisenhower could not be re-elected due to the 22nd amendment, so it made him en-eligible. Kennedy was elected with a lead of 112,827 votes,giving him a victory of 303 to 219. Kennedy was a Democratic and his running mate was Lyndon B. Johnson. He was the 45th president.
