Event 16
June 17, 1960- This was when the Twenty Third Amendment was proposed by the Congress. It permits citizens in The District of Columbia to vote for electors, president, and vice president.The District Of Columbia is Washington D.C. It was ratified by the states on March 29, 1961. The first Presidential election in which it was in effect was the presidential election of 1964. Since Washington D.C. is not a state,the state was not allowed to vote.
Event 17
May 5, 1961- This was when the first American went into space. Alan Shepard would go on the Freedom 7 and go into space. It was the first human spaceflight in The United States. The original plan was to orbit the earth before the Soviet Union, but the Soviet Union managed to send cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin into pace a month before. It was just a 15 minute suborbital flight. That meant going above the limit of space at an altitude of 100 kilometers(62 miles) and down again.
Event 18
February 20,1962- John Glenn Orbits the earth. He was the first American to orbit Earth.Glenn spent 4 hours and 56 minutes in flight in Mercury spacecraft Friendship 7 and orbited Earth three times. The Human Spaceflight mission was called Mercury-Atlas 6. It was a mission conducted by NASA. Before the mission problems delayed it many times.
Event 19
October 15, 1962 - This was when the Cuba Missile Crisis began for the United States. The Cuban Missile Crisis was the closest the world ever came to nuclear war. The United States Armed Forces were at the highest state of readiness ever. The Soviet Commanders were ready to use nuclear field weapons in Cuba if it were ever invaded by the U.S. October 27 was the worst day of the crisis. A U-2 was shot down over Cuba and EX-COMM( A group made from President Kennedy to take care of the situation) received a second letter from Khrushchev demanding the removal of U.S. missiles in Turkey in exchange for Soviet missiles in Cuba. October 8 marked when both sides agreed
Event 20
August 28, 1963- This was when Martin Luther King Jr. did his famous "I have a dream speech". He did it in Washington D.C. Over 200,000 Black and White people went to go hear the ground breaking speech. He says that all men are equal and should be treated equally. Many times in his speech, King states how black citizens have been mistreated over the years. King uses many historical documents to support his argument. He uses many large and descriptive words in his speech.
Event 21
November 22,1963- John. F Kennedy is assassinated. The 35th president died on Friday at 12:30. He was killed in Dallas,Texas. He was shot with a sniper while traveling with his wife and the governor of Texas. A ten-month investigation concluded that Kennedy was assassinated by Lee Harvey Oswald, acting alone, and that Jack Ruby also acted alone when he killed Oswald before he could stand trial. No one knows who really killed President Kennedy but they say it Lee Harvey Oswald. Lyndon B. Johnson would become president.
In the video it talks about the assassination. The video explains how he died. It also shows him getting sniped. They call it the Tragedy in Dallas. At 12:30 he died. He turned into Dealey Plaza. He was shot by a sniper and you can see him fall on his wife. At the end you can see his wife reach for a piece of his head.
Event 22
July 2, 1964- This was when the Civil Rights act of 1964 was enacted. It ended segregation in public places. It banned employment discrimination on the basis of race, color, religion, sex or national origin. It is considered one of the crowning legislative achievements of the civil rights movement. It was proposed by Former President Kennedy but was signed into law by President Johnson. It survived Congress from the South's strong opposition.
Event 23
August 27, 1964-This was when the 24th amendment was passed by Congress. It was important to the Civil Rights Movement. It prohibits both Congress and the states from conditioning the right to vote in federal elections on payment of a poll tax or other types of tax. It ended mandatory poll taxes that prevented many African Americans from having any sort of political power, especially in the South. When it was passed, 5 southern states still had poll taxes. It was ratified by the states on January 23, 1964.
Event 24
November 3, 1964- This was when Lyndon B. Johnson was elected President. He took over for president Kennedy a year before when he was assassinated. This was 45th Presidential Election. He was up against Barry Goldwater. Johnson had 486 Electoral votes while Goldwater had 52. Johnson easily won the Presidency, carrying 44 of the 50 states and the District of Columbia.
