Event 25- Fun Fact!
January 15, 1967- This was the first NFL-AFL World Championship game. Also known as Super Bowl I. It was against two rivalry leagues who each felt the pressure to win. The NFL was the Green Bay Packers and the AFL was the Kansas City Chiefs. The NFL would win 35-10. This was the only Superbowl game to not be a sellout. The MVP was Bart Starr the NFL Quarterback.
Event 26-
February 23, 1967- This was when the 25th Amendment was adopted. The Twenty-fifth Amendment to the United States Constitution is about the succeeding to the Presidency, filling a vacancy in the office of the Vice President, as well as responding to Presidential disabilities. In simple meaning it means the Vice President shall be succeeded as President if he died, resigns, or is removed from office or is otherwise unable to discharge the powers of the presidency. During the time of the tenth president this wasn't a law but it started when the 9th president died and the vice president took over. During the time of this event John F. Kennedy died and the president took over. Last but not least the new president would get to choose a new vice president.
Event 27-
April 4, 1968- The Man who spoke the famous "I had a dream speech" was assassinated in Memphis. Martin Luther King Jr. was shot in the cheek that broke his jaw. He was shot at exactly 6:01 pm. After emergency chest surgery he was pronounced dead at 7:05 pm at ST. Josephs Hospital. King's autopsy revealed that though only 39 years old, he "had the heart of a 60 year old", which Branch attributed to the stress of 13 years in the civil rights movement. His death brought a nationwide wave of riots! Two months after his death, James Earl Ray confessed to assassinating Dr. King. He was sentenced to 99 years in prison.
Event 28-
April 11,1968- This was when the Civil Right Act of 1968 was enacted. It is a landmark piece of legislation in the United States that provided for equal housing opportunities regardless of race, creed, or national origin. It was signed during the death of Dr. King by President Johnson. It was known as the Fair Housing Act. It was a follow up to the 1964 act. The 1866 Civil Rights Act prohibited discrimination in housing but there were no federal enforcement provisions. The 1968 act prohibited discrimination of sales, rental, religion, and natural origin.
Event 29-
November 5, 1968- Richard Nixon is elected President. This was the 46th presidential election. He defeated Democratic Hubert Humphrey. He was the incumbent vice president.There was also a third party of George Wallace. Richard Nixon won 32 states and Humphrey had 13+D.C. Wallace had 5 states to his favorite. Nixon had 301 electoral votes, Humphrey had 191, and Wallace had 46.
Event 30-
July 20, 1969- This was when Apollo 11 landed on the moon. It landed at 8:18 pm. It launched at The Kennedy Space Center on July 16, 1969 at 9:32 am. There was 3 members of the crew. The Commander was Neil Armstrong, the Command Module Pilot was Michael Collins, and the Lunar Module Pilot was Edwin Aldrin Jr. Six hours after they landed on the moon Neil Armstrong opened up the hatch and became the first to step on the moon. Armstrong spent 2 hours and 30 minutes outside the ship while Aldrin had a little less. They collected 47.5 pounds of lunar rock while Collins was orbiting space alone for one day until they were ready to go back to Earth. On July 24,1969 they returned home where they would be quarantined for 21 days.
In the video it shows the First Moon Landing. This is the NASA space mission of Apollo 11. Here you can see them coming out of the Lunar Module and them placing the American Flag on the moon. You see NASA onlooking them on the big screen at the headquarters. You can hear NASA talking to the astronauts Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin. Other than this in the video you see them walking around the moon. The famous line which is not featured in the video is Armstrong saying "One small step for man, a giant leap for mankind."
